Richard de Belder

Richard de Belder is a partner in the London office of the international law firm Dentons and heads up the global co-ordination of the firm’s Islamic Finance practice. He has been involved in a wide range of Shari’ah-compliant transactions since the mid 1990s. Richard has worked closely with leading Shari’ah scholars to create ground breaking structures and internationally recognised solutions that comply with the requirements of the Shari’ah as well as secular laws and regulatory issues.

He has over twenty years experience of living and working in the Middle East (the UAE and Oman) and continues to maintain strong ties with the region which go back to 1979.  He was previously the Managing Partner of Dentons’ Abu Dhabi office.

Richard chaired the Legal Group of the UK Islamic Finance Secretariat (UKIFS) and in 2013 was one of seven non-ministerial members of the UK Government’s Islamic Finance Task Force. He is also on the Islamic Finance and Banking Advisory Board of the Centre for Islamic Finance at the University of East London and is on the advisory board of the Islamic Finance Council. In addition he is a regular speaker at international conferences and seminars on Islamic finance and has had many articles published.
